Director of Nicholas Brendon’s Last Film Remembers ‘Buffy’ Star: ‘This Loss Is a Gut Punch’

The director of Nicholas Brendon’s final film has reflected on the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star’s passing, describing the loss as a “gut punch” for those who knew him. In an interview with Variety, the filmmaker behind Yesterday Is Almost Here shared personal insights into Brendon’s involvement in the project, which was completed shortly before his death in 2025.

Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on the cult series, had been battling mental health issues in recent years. His death at the age of 54 sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, prompting tributes from co-stars and fans alike. The director, who requested anonymity, spoke candidly about the emotional toll of working with Brendon during the film’s production, recalling his professionalism despite his struggles.

“Nicholas was always incredibly dedicated, even when things were difficult,” the director said. “He brought a warmth and authenticity to the role that made this film special. Losing him so soon after finishing the project makes this bittersweet in a way I can’t fully articulate.” The film, a drama centered on themes of redemption and connection, marks one of Brendon’s final screen appearances.

Brendon’s sister, Kelly Donovan, confirmed his death last year, stating that he had been open about his battles with bipolar disorder and addiction. The family has since advocated for greater awareness of mental health issues within the industry. Colleagues on Yesterday Is Almost Here described Brendon as a “gentle soul” whose presence left a lasting impact on the set.

As the film prepares for its premiere at an upcoming festival, the director emphasized the importance of honoring Brendon’s legacy. “He was more than Xander Harris—he was someone who touched people deeply, both on and off screen,” the filmmaker noted. “This loss is something we’ll carry with us.”
