LONDON — NBCUniversal’s global expansion of *Saturday Night Live* has taken a new turn with the confirmation that *SNL U.K.*, the British iteration of the iconic sketch comedy franchise, will extend its first season to eight episodes, up from an initially planned six.
The decision, announced on Friday by NBCUniversal International Networks, reflects strong early momentum for the series, which premiered on July 12 on Peacock. The extension comes amid growing anticipation for the show’s blend of live improvisation, celebrity guest hosts, and topical satire, tailored to a British audience. NBCUniversal has not disclosed whether additional tapings will be added beyond the original schedule.
“The response to *SNL U.K.* has been incredibly positive,” said a spokesperson for the network. “We’re thrilled to give viewers more of the sharp wit and energy that has defined *SNL* for decades.” The extended run will allow the production team to further refine the format, which has featured a mix of homegrown British talent and returning *SNL* veterans in supporting roles.
Industry analysts suggest the move may also be a strategic response to competitive pressure in the U.K. streaming market, where comedy programming has seen heightened demand. Rival platforms have recently greenlit multiple sketch and variety series, prompting NBCUniversal to leverage the established *SNL* brand for differentiation.
The remaining two episodes will air on Peacock in September, following the original broadcast schedule. The extension does not affect the show’s second season, which remains on track for a 2027 debut. Production on the additional episodes is slated to begin in late August, with filming taking place at Pinewood Studios near London.
